Arnold Johnson

Arnold Lee Dell Johnson, 92 years of age, of Franklin, Nebraska, passed away Thursday, October 10, 2013, at Golden Living Center in Franklin, Nebraska . He was born on April 8, 1921 in Campbell, Nebraska to John and Mabel (Schenk) Johnson.

Arnold attended school in Campbell and graduated high school before attending Kearney State College, where he earned a two year teaching certificate. He had fond memories of cruising main streets in his Model A, and was easy going, and took life as he found it. He taught school in District 58 and in District 44. Arnold took time away from teaching to serve in the United States Army during World War II. He served as a telephone switchboard operator for the 242nd Field Artillery Battalion, and was in Northern France, Rhineland, and in Central Europe. He married Nellie Amelia Berlie on August 23, 1946, at Franklin, Nebraska. To this union two sons were born - Dean and Larry. Arnold became the deputy Franklin County Treasurer, from 1946 to 1951. He worked for Franklin Motor Company from 1951 to 1955, as a parts man. Arnold returned to the Franklin County Treasurers office from January 1955 to January 1987. He continued to serve as local service officer for the veterans, and was past board member and treasurer, and volunteer of the church. He was active in the United Methodist Church, in Franklin, as long as his health allowed. He served as past President of the Nebraska County Treasurers Association, and on the Franklin Senior Center Board. He was active in the American Legion Post and Franklin V.F.W. Post No. 5757. Arnold always had time for fellowship, at the church or with the guys at the Coop. He enjoyed his acreage, keeping it looking so nice and trimmed, on his tractor. Arnold had a pet peeve, if you used a tool or possession, that is what they were for, so put it back where you got it. He also enjoyed family, especially the granddaughters, and always want to make sure they were safe. He was concerned with his good neighbors - Rose, Oliver and Eva, Ethel and others. He wanted to help them in any way he could. He was a Christian, and lived a Christian life and filled it with Christian values.

Arnold is survived by his two sons - Dean and wife, Kathy Johnson of Lincoln, Nebraska, Larry and wife, Asti Johnson of Overland Park, Kansas; 2 granddaughters - Jennifer Johnson and Amelia Johnson, both of Overland Park, Kansas; and a host of brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law; nieces; nephews; and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nellie, in 1985; father, John H. Johnson; mother, Mabel Johnson; a brother, Delton and wife Val Jean Johnson.

A Celebration of Life service for Arnold L. Johnson will be held at 10:30a.m. Monday, October 21, 2013, in the United Methodist Church, Franklin, Nebraska, with Pastor Roger Frederick officiating. Mrs. Connie Schmidt will be the organist. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery - Franklin Nebraska, Franklin. Visitation will be held from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm Saturday, October 19, 2013 and 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, October 20, 2013, with family greeting friends from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm in the Hutchins Funeral Home in Franklin. Memorials may be left to Franklin United Methodist Church or Franklin Senior Center with the funeral home in charge. Condolences may be left online at www.hutchinsfh.com.
