Douglas Jay Miller, the youngest of four children of Robert and Keitha (Worman) Miller, was born February 24, 1949, at Inavale, Nebraska and died at his home in Binsfeld, Germany on January8, 2008 at the age of 58 years, 10 months and 15 days. When Doug was 4 the family moved to Riverton, Nebraska where he received most of his formal education.
Grave side funeral services were held at the Riverton Cemetery, Riverton, NE on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 with Rev. Neil Kloppenborg officiating.
Doug married Paula McCormick on February 16, 1968 at Red Cloud, Nebraska where they lived for several years and became the parents of two daughters: Tamatha in July of 1968, and Taphnne in October of 1971. In 1975 Doug joined the US Air Force. It was here that he completed his high school education. He spent the majority of his 20 year career in Germany. Most of that time he was a Fire Fighter with the 52 Civil Engineering Squadron at the Spangdahlem Air Base in western Germany. In April of 1995, Tech-Sargent Douglas Miller retired with honor from active duty with the Air Force but continued to work on the base golf course, managing the grounds and keeping its crew.
Doug rented an apartment in Binsfeld, Germany from Helga and Ernie Kemmer. Soon Helga, Ernie and their neighbors became friends and family and there, Doug made his home. Helga and Ernie, along with neighbors and friends cared for him as they would a brother, right up to the end.
Before his illness, Doug was involved in building and racing stock cars with his friends in Germany, winning many trophies. He loved to read, and spent lots of time on his computer. He was an avid coin collector.
Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Keitha, and his oldest brother, Johnny. Left to morn is loss are: his wife, Paula, his daughters, Tamatha Myers, and Taphnne Pursley, from the Phoenix area, his grandchildren, Ashley, Nicole, Jacque and Justis, and a new great-granddaughter, Kaylee, born to Ashley on October, 23, 2007, his brother, Steve of Atwater, Ohio, and his sister, Donna Nicholson of Bloomington, NE, his dear friends, Helga and Ernie of Binsfeld, Germany, and many other relatives, and friends.
